The area of the East of Asturias is very popular for tourism because of its privileged location between the magnificent Picos de Europa and beautiful sandy beaches. It is also well connected by the airports of Asturias (Ranon) and Cantabria (Santander) as this area borders between Asturias and Cantabria.
The River Sella is one of the most important Salmon Rivers of Spain and fishermen enjoy not only the quality fishing but the amazing scenery as well.
In this area you can enjoy activities such as trekking, paddling, canoeing, canyoning, mountain biking, spelunking, climbing, horse riding among others.
Also it is a very important area for its representation of Paleolitic Art and the examples of โIndiano Architectureโ which shows the influence of the Emigration of Asturians towards Latin America and North America and it is displayed and explained in the โMuseum of the Emigrationโ in Colombres.
In Onis you can find numerous examples of religious art, large Asturian country houses and examples of popular architecture such as The Tower of Sirviella considered of cultural interest. In Onis are also ethnographic centres of asturian food stores called โHorreosโ and โPanerasโ which are beautifully crafted out of wood and raised off the ground on stilts.
In Onis also you have access to several routes such as โThe Route of the Asturian country housesโ and many of the routes through out the Picos de Europa.
You can also visit the โInterpretation Centre for the Glacier Fauna of the Picos de Europaโ in the location of Avin, or the Biodiversity and Sustainability Centre called โThe Mounains of the white-tailed eagleโ in Benia de Onis.
The Gastronomy in Onis is traditional Asturias based in casseroles, Asturian reared beef, fish from the rivers or the sea, shellfish, organic vegetables and traditional desserts. But the emblem of the council and the area is the very much appreciated Gamonedo Cheese. This is cured in very characteristic caves. Sometimes they also use this caves for doing music concerts.
In Onis at the beginning of August they celebrate a very painteresque traditional market.
