The route to Human Rights along the Camino Primitivo
The Route to Human Rights along the Camino Primitivo of Saint James launched a pioneer program to present and promote the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in schools along the Original Way of Saint James. This ISHR «International Solidarity for Human Rights» program is carried out in collaboration with “Where is Asturias”
Aware of the importance acquired by the Northern Caminos since their recognition as World Heritage by UNESCO, Elizabeth Sanchez Vegas – President – and Devorah Sasha – Director – have walked the Camino Primitivo, the first known route and the original route of the Jacobean pilgrimages, to embed the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the Camino de Santiago.
During their walking through the primitive way, ISHR members combined their pilgrimage with visits to the schools where they shared activities aimed at educating the children; they also gave the children a 64 pages Illustrated Pocket Guide to Human Rights in English and Spanish, in addition to naming them universal ambassadors of the organization.
At the end of the program, the children were given the opportunity to express their testimonials and opinions to ISHR in drawings, phrases, paintings, essays, etc … their expressions will be intervened by an artist to be a part of an art work that will be exhibited at the Centro Cultural Español in Miami.
Despite having been declared by the UN the “Magna Carta of Mankind» human rights are barely known by only 5% of the world’s population and only 1% of the world population have read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; people hardly knows that there are 30 rights and that we exercise them 24 hours a day. They are as simple as to sleep, to eat, to go to school or to cure a simple cold acts that correspond with the right to rest, the right to food and shelter, the right to education, the right to health, among others.
The ISHR collaborates with Miami Dade College in human rights projects; MDC is the largest institution of Higher Education in the US, with 174,000 students; its president Dr. Eduardo Padron is one of the educational advisers at the White House. ISHR wants to establish this program as an annual visit to the Camino de Santiago where they can bring volunteers and American students from different Universities who wish to participate in this important social program of education in human rights.
