The Councils of Candamo and Las Regueras are part of the Camin Real de la Mesa (Royal route of the table). This route is Pre-Romanic in origin and up to 19th century, it was one of the busiest routes between Asturias and the central plains of Spain. You can still find the original Roman Pavements as the route winds its way through hills, meadows and along the River Nalon.
Located at the centre of Asturias, Candamo are less than 30 minutes from the city of Oviedo, the airport of Asturias or the beautiful beaches of Castrillón or the West of Asturias.
The most important visit in Candamo is The Cave Paintings of the La Peña Cave which is has been a UNESCO Mankind Heritage since 2008. It was discovered in 1914 and was declared National Monument in 1923. The interpretation centre is in the town of San Roman, at the Palace of Valdes Bazan which dates from the 17th century.
The most important monument visit in Las Regueras is the Roman thermal baths of Valduno just beside the parish church.
Both Councils offer amazing landscapes, forests and towns with very nice Routes to walk like the Lanceros Route, The Palaces Route or the Piedrafita Route. At the border of Candamo and Las Regueras, amidst the mountains of El Pedrosu and Bufaran, you will find the old fortifications and bunkers left behind after Spanish Civil War.
Around these councils you can also practice many kinds of sports and adventure activities such as canoeing, mountain biking, spelunking, canyoning and archery to mention but a few.
The Gastronomy of Candamo & Las Regueras is of classical Asturian fare, enjoying very nice seasonal vegetables, stews, Asturian reared beef and nice fish from the Rivers or Sea and nice desserts. Candamo is very popular for strawberries and hosts a festival dedicated to all things strawberry during the first weekend of June.
