Industry and services in Asturias

Industry in Asturias. There are some 68.000 companies operating in the productive and service sectors in Asturias.

The entrepreneurial vocation of the people of Asturias has been transmitted to the genetics of their companies, which gives them advantages in export skills and external relations. This quality is recognized internationally and each day it is more and more common to find Asturian products throughout the European marketplace, given its quality of products, ease in business relations and the enforcement of contracts.

The most representative sectors of Industry in Asturias are the following:

AGRI-FOOD INDUSTRY:

– Dairy products, with a production of more than 620.000 tons of dairy products each year.

– Meat, passing through all stages of the production process, with more than 68.500 tons per year. Both in pre-cooked products, as well as in cured, cooked and cold meat.

– Canneries, is an expanding sector with great increase in business that focuses on the “gourmet” quality product.

– Other products. Like cider, the traditional drink of Asturias, and therefore a very powerful industry which has obtained the Protected Designation of Origin. Also, mineral water and the manufacture of foodstuffs for livestock are important growing industries.

METAL INDUSTRY IN ASTURIAS

– Steel industry, it is one of the most important industrial activities since the nineteenth century. It produces mainly steel, tinplate and heavy plates.

– Metallurgy, with the manufacture of aluminum, zinc and copper, as well as alloys and derivatives. Asturias produces 20% of the zinc at European level and 6,4% at global level.

– Equipment, implementation of «turnkey» projects for mining industry, construction, defence, environment, etc. We can also find important companies in engineering, assembly, maintenance, etc.

– Naval Industry. Large yards for vessels of up to 40 thousand tons, as well as yachts, fishing boats, frigates, etc.

– Automotive Industry. The manufacturing of mopeds, coachworks, windscreens, shock absorbers, gearboxes, etc.

CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN ASTURIAS:

– Industrial carbon chemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceutical products, synthetic fibres, etc.

MINING INDUSTRY IN ASTURIAS:

– Mining is in the DNA of Asturias, and besides coal, other raw materials are extracted such as kaolin, marble, slate, limestone, dolomite or quartzite.

OTHER SECTORS:

– Glass, cement, plastics, textiles, electronic equipment, household appliances, toys and jewelry.

– Renewable Energies: Asturias is one of the most important manufacturers of solar panels and wind mills of Europe. It is also involved in very ambitious projects of Offshore Wind Energy and Cogeneration.

SERVICES:

– The Information and Communications Technology sector (ICT) represents the 10% of turnover in the Asturian services sector.

An important number of companies in the sector have joined the Asturian Knowledge Innovating Business Group in order to improve their competiveness. In addition, there is an ICT cluster (clustertic.net) of around 82 companies.

Besides that, Asturias welcomes the W3C (World Wide Web) Consortium, (w3c.es), the most important international organization in the field of standardization of the internet.

– A wide range of other services like: civil, agricultural, electrical, industrial and computer engineering; consulting, quality and environmental management, business consulting, human resources, security, graphic design, advertising and outsourcing of different services.

Desde Where is Asturias os deseamos una Feliz Navidad 2018 con esta felicitación filmada en el Ecomuseo del Valle de Samuño en Langreo, que forma parte del increíble Patrimonio Industrial del Principado de Asturias.

«Numerosas minas de montaña convivieron con dos pozos de extracción vertical, a los que se sumaron explotaciones a cielo abierto, cuatro líneas de ferrocarril e innumerables planos inclinados y cables aéreos. En las laderas se formaron multitud de escombreras de estériles del carbón. En las aldeas se conservan tipologías tradiciones de vivienda y aún puede sentirse la más pura esencia de la Asturias rural, que ha pervivido fosilizada en el tiempo por su carácter de actividad secundaria. El valle nunca volvió a ser el mismo, y sus habitantes proletarizados abanderaron el progreso y las imparables conquistas sociales. The council of Langreo and La Felguera

This area is a part of the Mancomunidad of the Nalon Valley formed by the councils of Langreo, San Martin del Rey Aurelio, Laviana, Sobrescobio and Caso

The council of Langreo it is located in the south east of Asturias and connected by the Nalon River.

In this area you have two main protected landscapes; the first one is the wonderful natural landscapes of the Redes Natural Park which is a Biosphere Reserve in Sobrescobio and Caso. The second one is the Protected Landscapes of the Mining Basins in Langreo, San Martin del Rey Aurelio and Laviana.

The area of Langreo is very valuable for its industrial legacy. In the middle of XVIII and XIX century the Nalon Valley was immersed in an authentic industrial Revolution that transformed the face of the valley and its way of life. Coal mining, iron and steel production together with the development of the railways, were the basic pillars for this industrialisation process.

In Langreo you can visit a lot of this industrial heritage such as The Old Duro Felguera Works or the Urquijo District in La Felguera, San Luis Colliery in La Nueva, Fondon Colliery in Sama, Maria Luisa Colliery in Ciañu or the Iron Bridge of La Maquinilla in Sama. Also they offer different Routes around the Industrial Patrimony such as The Iron and Steel Route around La Felguera, The Route through the Sama District or the Route through the Samuño Valley.

Here you can visit the Asturias Iron and Steel Museum (MUSI) housed in the impressive cooling tower from the Old Duro Felguera Iron and Steel Works. It is also very important the Mining and Industrial Museum (MUMI) which offers a journey through the technical history of European mining, the age of steam and Asturian industrialization.

Regarding to artistic patrimony in the council of Langreo you can find the Tower of Quintana, the House of the Solis, the Church of San Esteban or the Virgin of Carbayu Home Asylum and Chapel all in Ciañu; or the chapel of Our Lady of the Carbayu in El Carbayu.

The main village of the Council of Langreo is called with the same name and there you can visit the Eduardo Urculo Municipal Art Gallery, the Armando Palacio Valdes visitors centre and the Redes Natural Park Reception and Visitors Centre or the House of the Water in the Redes Natural Park.

In the council of Langreo you can also find a large representation of ethnographic patrimony through traditional housing, stables and barns, horreos and paneras, grinding mills, public springs, washing places and animal troughs.

The council of Langreo enjoys the mountains of the Protected Area of the Cuenca Minera made up of the headwaters of the rivers Samuño, Santa Barbara and the Villoria, tributaries rivers of the River Nalon. There are many Walking Routes in the council such as the Circular Route of Ciañu, the Peña Villa Ascent, the Braña Walk, The Llantamartin Route, or the Mills Route among others.

In this area you can practice a wide range of activities according to the season, fishing and hunting are two of the most deeply rooted in the Valley. In Autumn you can listen the sounds of braying deer. Also the reservoirs of Tanes and Rioseco are a unique situation for bird watching, especially at Rioseco where there are two purpose-built observation posts.

This is also a fantastic area for the practice of different sports such as walking, trekking, mountaineering, mountan biking, rock and ice climbing, horse riding, cycling and Nordic Skiing.

The other main attraction of the area is the Gastronomy enjoying Asturias traditional food based in Stews, Asturias beef, fish from the rivers, local Asturias sweets. But the star of the region is the high Nalon trout, the Casin Cheese, one of the oldest in Spain, and the Nalón whispers which are exquisite butter pastries.

The council Somiedo and Pola de Somiedo

The Council of Somiedo is part of the Camín Real de la Mesa. This route is Pre-Romanic in origin and, up to 19th century, it was one of the busiest routes between Asturias and the central plains of Spain, connecting with the well-known Route of the Silver. You can still find the original Roman Pavements as the route winds its way through hills, meadows and along the Rivers Narcea and Pigueña.

It is well located at the South-centre of Asturias, in the middle of breath-taking mountains, and less than 40 minutes from the city of Oviedo, the airport of Asturias, and the beautiful beaches of Castrillón or the West of Asturias.

The Natural Park of Somiedo is an extraordinary landscape and it is an incredible place for lovers of nature with peaks of over 2,100 metres. These mountains, now a Biosphere reserve have twelve organized routes to walk, cycle or horse-riding. One of the most popular is through “Las Brañas Asturianas” which are gorgeous meadows and pasturelands with very characteristic Stone Mountain Cabins with thatched roofs known as Teitos. These cabins were used by cattle herders known as “vaqueiros de alzada” to take refugee from bad weather. They were migrant cattle herders that spend their summer days in high mountain pastures to then go to lower ground during winter season. In Somiedo you will find some of the most popular Brañas like La Pornacal, La Campa Mumian or Braña Viella. You can learn everything you ever wanted to know about the Natural Park in the Interpretation Centre of the Natural Park of Somiedo, where you can admire a permanent exposition about all the resources of the Park.

The Eco-Museum, separated in three different centres, is a showing of the traditional life style of Somiedo. The first centre, located in Veigas has three “Teitos” with the traditional broom thatching. The second centre, located in Caunéu, is a showroom of the different trades and crafts that traditionally took place in the county. The last one, located in La Pola de Somiedo, has different showcases shaped as Teitos that, through objects, images and text show the traditional house and lifestyle: agriculture, transport, bread-baking, water, hunting and fishing.

The Interpretation Centre of Somiedo and the Bear shows the way Somiedo has always been linked to the brown bear. From here you can also book guided tours organized by the “Fundación Oso Pardo” or Brown Bear Foundation to follow the steps of the brown bear, to see its natural environment, and meet the rest of the fauna.

Another of the more popular and beautiful Routes of Asturias and the area are the Routes of the Lakes of Somiedo. This area is home of most important lakes in Asturias, the lakes of Saliencia and the Lake Valley. The Route to the Lake Valley is a much frequented one by locals and foreigners throughout the year.

In Somiedo you can also admire the annual Rut of the Stag, one of the most haunting and impressive mating rituals, that takes place between late summer and early autumn. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy natural life at its purest form. To enjoy this activity you can book one of the many packages available.

If you just want to enjoy the impressive views and landscapes of this area then you must visit the Prince’s Viewpoint in the town of La Peral. It is also recommended that you visit the town of Pola de Somiedo or any of the other local country towns and villages in the area. The hydroelectric power station at Malva, built in 1915 and is still in service, offers a fine example of industrial architecture.

Somiedo is the perfect place to enjoy a day out in nature.

The Gastronomy of the area is classically Asturian providing very nice seasonal vegetables, stews, Asturian reared beef and nice fish from the rivers or sea and also a nice selection of desserts and cheeses.

The council of Aller and Cabañaquinta

Aller is also known as the gate of Asturias because it is what you will first see as you are head north from the plains of Leon in Spain. This is quite an impressive journey, positioned at the border between Leon and Asturias you are welcomed by the magnificent and vibrant beauty of the Mountains which makes quite an impressive picture.

The Central Mountain range offer a wealth of Natural and Protected Spaces, leafy Beech and Oak forests, green mountain pastures, narrow valleys and large meandering rivers.

This natural beauty is juxtaposed with examples of past and present mining activity as Slack-heaps, mine entrances, Headframes, worker’s housing, etc dot the landscape. This is a real cornucopia for those who have an interest in Industrial architecture and landscapes. Mining has moulded Asturias and plays a significant part in her story so it is worth while learning about this history as it will help to understand the local community a bit more.

Aller is home to a wealth of stone monuments, megalithic structures, necropolis and old settlements. The Route of the Silver cross the territory of Aller. The Route of the Silver is Roman in origin and crosses the peninsula from north to south starting in Gijón, Asturias, and finishing in Seville, Andalucía. This was built to facilitate commerce and legion movement. After that, the route was mainly used by shepherds who took their livestock to the greener pastures of Asturias during the summer

The Council of Aller borders with the community of Castilla Leon. Aller is a natural paradise enjoying the impressive mountains of the Principado de Asturias such as the San Isidro pass, Vegarada, Piedrafita and the Via Carisa. The large rivers of this area such as S. Isidro, Negro and Aller are teeming with trout and other fish. The dense forests are home to the wildlife like Deer, Wolves, Foxes, Wild Boar, Otter, Sables, Capercaillies (which is a type of Grouse), and many species of birds.

The main town in Aller is called Moreda. The most important cultural and historic aspects of Aller are the megalithic necropolis of El Padrún in Boo from the 4^th century BC, the monolith of “El Moyón de la Corrala” in Pola de El Pino, The Church of San Vicente de Serapio, The Church of San Juan El Real de Llamas and St Felix de El Pino and the Church of St Juan de Rumiera de Satibanez de la Fuente, all considered Artistic and Historic Monuments.

You will find many fine examples of Industrial Mining Heritage throughout the area. Some of the best examples are the “Pit of San Jorge”, “The Pit of San Fernando” and the Hearframes of San Jorge, Santiago and San Antonio.

Aller is the start of many Routes and it is also part of the La Carisa Way which is one of the pre-historic routes that connected Asturias with the rest of the peninsula. It was the first road built and widely used by the Romans to accommodate safe passage for their carriages. You can still see some of the original road preserved as you travel along its route. The Roman camp of La Carisa is located on the Curriel peak and at 1,728metres, it was the highest Roman military camp in Europe and could house up to approx 10,000 men.

The area of Aller is a fantastic place to do any kind of sports and is well set up for trekking, mountaineering, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, fishing, Mountain biking, quad biking, horse riding, spelunking, paragliding, etc.

Two of the most important sporting activities in the area are climbing in Pelugano and Cuevas; and skiing as Aller is home to the Winter Ski Resort of Fuentes de Invierno, the newest and most modern ski station in Asturias.

Aller boasts some stunning natural monuments such as “Foces de El Pino” or the yew tree of Santibañez de la Fuente and beautiful pasturelands like Valencia, La Tabierna, El Gumial, El Rason, Palmial or La Escosura. During months the autumn, the mountains sides echo with the sound of Stags rutting for mates which is an eerie and magnificent experience to behold.

The other main attraction of the area is the local gastronomy offering a traditional Asturian fare based on Stews, Asturias reared beef, fish from the rivers, cheeses and Asturias desserts but the toast of the region is the handmade Rye Bread and the Sweet Bread Pudding called Panchon.

The council and town of Taramundi

Taramundi is a very beautiful and picturesque town in the middle of the Mountains of Asturias in the Mancomunidad de Oscos-Eo.

One thing that defines Taramundi is the amazing mountain surrounds and the pastures dotted throughout with Teitos, which are old thatched roofed huts made of heather. The huts where used to protect both the farmers and cattle from inclement weather as livestock was moved from mountain fields to low lying pastures during spring or autumn.

The streams and rivers of Taramundi run abundant with crisp clean mountain water and you will find many well preserved old water mills still utilising the energy the rivers provide. The mills play a big part in local mythology and songs as they were used during early stages of the iron industry and for grinding grain throughout the area of Oscos-Eo. Some of the best examples of these mills are the “Mill Museum of Mazonovo” and the “Etnographic zone Os Teixois”, declared of Cultural Interest in 2005, which are a fantastic learning experience for adults and kids.

Taramundi is also famous for its traditional knife making industry. You can’t leave Taramundi without buying one of their excellent handmade knifes which hold their sharpness and are perfect for the kitchen and other uses. You can also find out more about the history and craft of this industry at the “Knife Museum”.

Taramundi has several Museums and workshops to visit related to arts, crafts, the knife industry and energy and ethnography. It was declared Arts and Craft heritage Area because of the continuing presence of its fine craftsmanship.

The town is surrounded by nature and you have plenty of mountain routes to do either walking, trekking or mountain biking such as “The Route of the Water Mills”, “The Route of the Water”, “The Route of The Ferreiros” or “The Route of Teixos”.

At every turn you’ll witness presence of Celtic history with traces of settlements and many examples of drawings and carvings on balconies, in corridors, and on traditional Asturias food stores or “horreos” / “paneras”.

The Gastronomy of Taramundi is mainly traditional Asturias cuisine with some Galician influences mainly based on Casseroles, Asturian reared beef, fresh fish from their rivers, cheeses and desserts. With all the mills in the area you can imagine they produce wonderful breads that are served with every meal.

The council and town of Villayón

The Councils of Villayon, Coaña and Boal, belong to an area called “The Historical Park of the Navia River”. This refers to an area of different councils with a common historical past stemming from the ancient inhabitants of Asturias. The west of Asturias is full of legends, mystery, magic and myth. This is largely because their location between the sea and the mountains of Galicia and Leon and their welcoming character as a land of travellers, farmers, fisherman, shepherds, sailors and craftsmen.

The whole area is like a living museum with exhibits of mountains, beaches, valleys, rivers, towns and forests where you can find history in every step through the remnants of the Celtic, Roman and Christian cultures.

If we had to define this area in few words then it would be inspirational, relaxing, spiritual and mystical

Other common denominators to all these areas are the mix of Galician and Asturias architecture, with stone structures and slate roofs. The traditional Asturian stores called “horreos” or “paneras” live side by side with Galician Style Barns. You will find these constructions right next to the houses and were designed protect cured meats and the vegetables from animals and insects.

During the middle Ages the nobility and clergy governed the land and left testimonies of their wealth in the form of Palaces, Large Stately Houses, chapels and sanctuaries. You will find a lot of examples of this throughout the enchanting small coastal and inland country villages.

The Council of Villayon is an ideal location to find the true essence of rural lifestyle and tradition in Asturias and is also home to some magical landscapes.

In Villayon you will find the archaeological sites of Neolithic and Celtic times such as the Dolmen of Barandon. Also it has many examples of medieval and religious architecture such as the Church of Arbon, the emblazoned houses in the beautiful high mountain pastures of Lendequintana and the Coat of Arms in Illaso.

But one of the most characteristic things about Villayon is the many collections ethnographic rural houses, Asturian food stores and other traditional rural buildings. It is especially worth mentioning the spectacular natural waterfalls of Mexica or Oneta as a great place to visit.

Villayon is crisscrossed by several rivers so you can enjoy plenty of different water sports like canoeing, paddling, sailing etc. Also there are many Routes to walk like the Route of the Waterfall of Oneta, The Route of the Waterfall of Mexica, The Route of the Dolmen of Barandon, or the Route of Villayon peak.

The Gastronomy of Villayon is mainly traditional Asturias cuisine with some Galician influance. It is mainly based on Casseroles, Asturian reared beef, fresh fish from their rivers, cheeses and desserts from the area.

The council of San Martin del Rey Aurelio and Sotrondio

This area is a part of the Mancomunidad of the Nalon Valley formed by the councils of Langreo, San Martin del Rey Aurelio, Laviana, Sobrescobio and Caso. It is located in the south east of Asturias and connected by the Nalon River.

The area of San Martin del Rey Aurelio is very valuable for its industrial legacy. In the middle of XVIII and XIX century the Nalon Valley was immersed in an authentic industrial Revolution that transformed the face of the valley and its way of life. Coal mining, iron and steel production together with the development of the railways, were the basic pillars for this industrialisation process.

San Martin del Rey Aurelio is based in the banks of the Nalon River and surrounded by mountains. It preserves civil and industrial architecture related to the coal extraction. Some examples are La Maquinilla Bridge or Los Gallegos Bridge in Sotrondio, The Villar Colliery of San Mames, The San Vicente Colliery in El Entrego, the Miramar Bridge in El Entrego, Les Chapes Bridge or La Oscura Bridge or The Entrego Colliery in El Entrego or the Cerezal Colliery in La Cruz, among others. They offer different Routes around the industrial areas such as The Pithead Route or Carrocera-La Gueria Carrocera Route.

Regarding to artistic patrimony in the council of San Martin del Rey Aurelio you can find the Dolmen of La Campa L’Españal, the Estela of Los Cuetos, the Church of San Martin or the Casona del Bravial in Blimea.

In the council of San Martin del Rey Aurelio you can also find a large representation of ethnographic patrimony through traditional housing, stables and barns, horreos and paneras, grinding mills, public springs, washing places and animal troughs.

The council of San Martin del Rey Aurelio enjoys the mountains of the Protected Area of the Cuenca Minera made up of the headwaters of the rivers Samuño, Santa Barbara and the Villoria, tributaries rivers of the River Nalon. There are many Walking Routes in the council such as Blimea-La Casilla Route, El Entrego-La Camperona Route, Carrocera-La Gueria de Carrocera Route, El Entrego-Valley of Santa Barbara Route or The Green Belt of La Bobia- La Colladiella Route.

In this area you can practice a wide range of activities according to the season, fishing and hunting are two of the most deeply rooted in the Valley. In autumn you can listen the sounds of braying deer. Also the reservoirs of Tanes and Rioseco are a unique situation for bird watching, especially at Rioseco where there are two purpose-built observation posts.

This is also a fantastic area for the practice of different sports such as walking, trekking, mountaineering, mountan biking, rock and ice climbing, horse riding, cycling and Nordic Skiing.

The other main attraction of the area is the Gastronomy enjoying Asturias traditional food based in Stews, Asturias beef, fish from the rivers, local Asturias sweets. But the star of the region is the high Nalon trout, the Casin Cheese, one of the oldest in Spain, and the Nalón whispers which are exquisite butter pastries.

The council of Laviana and Pola de Laviana

In this area you have two main protected landscapes; the first one is the wonderful natural landscapes of the Redes Natural Park which is a Biosphere Reserve in Sobrescobio and Caso. The second one is the Protected Landscapes of the Mining Basins in Langreo, San Martin del Rey Aurelio and Laviana.

The area of Laviana is very valuable for its industrial legacy. In the middle of XVIII and XIX century the Nalon Valley was immersed in an authentic industrial Revolution that transformed the face of the valley and its way of life. Coal mining, iron and steel production together with the development of the railways, were the basic pillars for this industrialisation process.

Laviana is based in the banks of the Nalon River and surrounded by mountains. It preserves civil and industrial architecture related to the coal extraction. Some examples are The Mine of Coto Musel, the Carrio Colliery in Barredos or the Drift Mining Route at the Musel Colliery.

Regarding to artistic patrimony in the council of Laviana you can find the Bridge of Arcu, the Church of San Martín in Llorio, the Tower of Condao in El Condao, The Casona of Menendez in L’Aldea or the Church of San Nicolás in Villoira.

In the council of Laviana you can also find a large representation of ethnographic patrimony through traditional housing, stables and barns, horreos and paneras, grinding mills, public springs, washing places and animal troughs.

The council of Laviana enjoys the mountains of the Protected Area of the Cuenca Minera made up of the headwaters of the rivers Samuño, Santa Barbara and the Villoria, tributaries rivers of the River Nalon.
